Certificate in General English
OBJECTIVE

This course allows students to develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing; learn how to use a wide range of vocabulary, and use of correct grammar, spelling and punctuation in order to develop a personal style and address awareness of the audience.

 
Learning outcome

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing
  • learn how to use a wide range of vocabulary
  • use the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation and develop a personal style and address an awareness of the audience
  • acquire the essential knowledge and skills for teaching English as second language to new learners
  • uplift the students’ skills to sit for international recognized examination for English at different levels for example IELTS, TOEFL.
 
Admission Requirements

The minimum entry requirement is either one of the following criteria:

  • Student must have minimum age of 16 years old with GCE ‘N/O’ Level results, SPM results, or equivalent/High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Mature applicants of 20 years of age with minimum of 2 years of working experience.
  • Other qualifications will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Min. English IELTS 4 or equivalent

Modules Synopsis

ENGW101 Core Skill – Writing

This module is designed to help students to write natural and clear sentences, as well as composing personal and business letters in order to help increase job skills and communication. In order to write well, students must practice concepts that involve grammatical structure, voice, style, and vocabulary usage. This course will carefully guide you through the basic structures and rules of the English-language and focus on improving skills that are necessary in order to write clearly and accurately.

 
ENGS102 Core Skill – Speaking

This module the student will focus on improving the ability to speak and to understand spoken English through a variety of listening, pronunciation, and speaking activities.

 
ENGL103 Core Skill – Listening

This module explains the ins and outs of what good listening skills consist of, why they are important and how you can improve them. The module helps you determine what type of listener you are, provides basic skills of listening, barriers to listening, listening habits, body language, and activities to improve listening habits. You will learn the importance of physical attributes, active listening, attitude, perception, bias, language barriers, key gestures, and even how to take good notes.

 
ENGR104 Core Skill – Reading

This reading module is designed to help students increase their reading speed as well as their ability to comprehend content, directions, and absorb materials for retention. Whether a student is taking this course to increase reading skills as a second or foreign language wishing to increase their comprehension of a wide variety of materials, students will be introduced to different techniques and materials.

Students are assessed based on assignments, projects, test and final examination.

 
Graduation Requirements

On successful completion of this Certificate in General English program, students will be able to receive a certificate “Certificate in General English” their respective area of course. This certificate is awarded by Chartered Institute of Technology.

Student must achieve an overall mark score of minimum 50% for all the modules in order to graduate with the respective award.

Articulation Pathway

Upon successful completion of this certificate program, students will be able to progress their study to the CITECH Diploma or Postgraduate Diploma program. Students will be able to progress to to the Diploma or Postgraduate Diploma program as long as they fulfil the entry requirements for IELTS and have a relevant minimum qualification requirement.
